Building on the success of last four years of competition, Computing For All is organizing The Fifth Annual Washington State Middle School Computer Science Competition. New this year, Computing Technology Fair.
PHILOSOPHY
CFA’s competition is designed to encourage students, teachers, and parents, to take interest in computer science and get excited about going after a recognizable, prestigious award. CFA hopes that this competition will give students and coaches a great reason to get together and learn computer science as they prepare for the contest. The organizers are inspired by all that has been accomplished via Math Olympiad and similar competitions in other STEM subjects. They have learned and applied their knowledge towards promoting computer science. The competition is in line with creating fundamental change, it is about motivation through gamification of learning, something many researchers have found to work better than simple classroom teaching. It is a tool used to motivate young students to have fun while learning valuable life skills.
PREPARATORY WORKSHOPS
To help students prepare for the competition and in the process, learn a few important computer science concepts, CFA has organized four 3-hour workshops at the following locations:
- 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM, Saturday, April 13, 2019 — Forest Ridge School of the Sacred Heart, Bellevue
- 4:30 PM – 7:30 PM, Wednesday, April 24, 2019 — Chinook Middle School, Bellevue
- 4:30 PM – 7:30 PM, Wednesday, May 1, 2019 — McClure Middle School, Seattle
- 4:30 PM – 7:30 PM, Friday, May 3, 2019 — Kimball Elementary School, Seattle
We will provide snacks (salad, fruit and veggies) and have 2-3 (depending on student attendance) instructors to go over full-length sample tests. Students will have the opportunity to take an individual test and participate in a team test, and the instructors will provide in-depth explanations of the solutions.
You will have the option to register for any one of these workshop when you register for the competition. Space is limited, you must register to attend. if you are not registered we will not be able to accommodate your student(s).
